The CicloRecreoVía is an initiative created (emulating international experiences), developed, and implemented by Geomás, a business that works to help communities reclaim public spaces and in environmental education.

Geomás develops projects and activities in order to achieve an effective, integral, and long-lasting well-being for individuals, organizations, and human groups in general. Therefore, it avoids participating in activities, projects, or initiatives that are likely to result in a decrease in quality of life over the long-term, regardless of the immediate results (even if they are positive) observed over the short-term.

Essentially, when making decisions and taking action, Geomás always considers not only current generations, but also future ones. Seeking to fulfill a model of sustainability, Geomás places values of factors that are not necessarily quantifiable or expressible in terms of dollars or profit. Finally, Geomás considers it a moral obligation to respect the right of all living species on earth to grow and to have access to an environment favorable to their survival.

The CicloRecreoVía is a project that respects and allows us to satisfy all of these principles in a way that is hard to find in other programs or activities. Therefore, we are proud to have conceived and worked for the implementation of CicloRecreoVías in Santiago.

Fortunately, the most difficult period for the CicloRecreoVías has passed and we are now convinced that (and there are already clear signs of this) in the short term we can expand the experience of the the CicloRecreoVía not only within La Reina, but also to the other comunas and communities that need it so dearly. Our ultimate goal is that the initiative will encompass all of the city, and involve all of its inhabitants.

Cordinadores en la CicloRecreoVía

In order to achieve these ambitious objectives, Geomás employs six individuals who work on the coordination and logistical work for the CicloRecreoVía:

  • Gonzalo Stierling Aguayo
  • Lina María Zuluaga
  • Adriana Correal Lesmes
  • Carlos Martínez Gutiérrez
  • Gabriela Parra Paredes
  • Nicolás Moreno Muñoz

Finally, Geomás is proud to count itself as a member of the Red de Ciclovías (Ciclorecreovías) Unidas de las Américas” (Network of United Bikeways of the Americas), an entity formed in November 2005 that works to promote initiatives like the CicloRecreoVía, which are based on the temporary closure of streets and roads in the cities of the Americas, with the goal to transform them, on a massive scale, into spaces fit for recreation and social activity.
